GRANDMASTER Art Beins

Owner & Master Instructor at Art Beins Karate

Grandmaster Art Beins, founder of Art Beins Karate, has been a leader in martial arts for over four decades, shaping students through discipline, self-defense, and personal development. Holding a 10th Degree Black Belt, he serves as President of the United States Black Cat Kenpo Karate Federation and has trained in Kenpo, Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwan, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, and wrestling. His martial arts journey began at age 13, training under Master Raymond Gay, while excelling as a state-ranked wrestler. He later became the 1973 New Jersey State College 158-pound Champion and ranked sixth nationally. His expertise has led to numerous honors, including seven Hall of Fame inductions, hosting the cable TV show "Karate & You" for eight years, and serving as an assistant coach for TEAM USA in 1997.


Under his leadership, Art Beins Karate has become a nationally recognized academy, earning titles like National Karate School of the Year twice and raising over $300,000 for charities. With locations in Howell and Freehold, NJ, the academy provides top-tier martial arts instruction, helping students of all ages develop confidence, discipline, and resilience. Grandmaster Beins' commitment to excellence, community, and personal growth continues to inspire generations of martial artists.

Master Larry Mesimer

Howell Program Director, Instructor


Master Larry Mesimer has been an integral part of Art Beins Karate and U.S. Black Cat Kenpo Karate for over four decades, demonstrating unwavering dedication to the art of Kenpo, instruction, and leadership. Training under Grandmaster Art Beins, he has earned numerous accolades and recognitions, solidifying his reputation as a highly skilled martial artist and instructor. His passion for teaching and commitment to excellence have shaped countless students, helping them develop discipline, confidence, and self-defense skills.


Since 1981, Master Mesimer has trained at U.S. Black Cat Kenpo Karate in Howell, NJ, earning prestigious titles such as Student of the Year (1986) and Student of the Decade (1990). His exceptional contributions to the martial arts community have been recognized with multiple honors, including Instructor of the Year (1992, 1994, 1996) and inductions into the World Karate Union Hall of Fame (2000) and Action Martial Arts Hall of Fame (2002).


In 1987, he joined Art Beins Karate Super Center as a Program Director and Instructor, playing a pivotal role in the academy's success. Under his leadership, Art Beins Karate has been consistently ranked among the Top 10 Martial Arts Schools in the Country since 1992, and was named “Karate School of the Year” by the World Sokeship Council in 1995. His contributions extend beyond instruction, as he has also served as Choreographer for the Black Cat Demo Team since 1988, helping to showcase the skill, discipline, and precision of Art Beins Karate students at events and competitions.


Master Mesimer’s legacy is one of dedication, excellence, and leadership, making him a respected mentor and role model in the martial arts community. His expertise, passion, and commitment continue to inspire students of all ages, ensuring that the principles of Kenpo and martial arts philosophy live on for generations to come.

Master Carl Beams, Jr.

Freehold Executive Director


Master Carl Beams Jr. is a 6th Degree Black Belt and Certified Master Instructor with decades of experience in Kenpo, Tae Kwon Do Moo Duk Kwan, Kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu, and Grappling. As Executive Director of the Art Beins Karate Black Belt Training Center in Freehold, NJ, he plays a pivotal role in mentoring and developing students at all levels. His multi-discipline martial arts expertise, combined with his deep understanding of competition and training, has made him a respected leader in the martial arts community.


A member of the Board of Directors for the United States Black Cat Kenpo Karate Federation, Master Beams has trained and competed extensively, earning the title of 2007 WKA Welterweight Full Contact Tri-State Champion and securing numerous tournament championships throughout his career. His dedication has been recognized with multiple accolades, including Most Improved Student of the Year (1994), SBCKKF Black Belt of the Year (1995), and induction into the Action Martial Arts Hall of Fame (2003). In 2015, he was honored with his 6th Dan Master Black Belt, a testament to his lifelong commitment to martial arts.


Master Beams believes in hard work, perseverance, and pushing past limitations, as reflected in one of his favorite quotes: “If you can’t excel with talent, triumph with effort.”—Weinbaum. His passion for teaching and dedication to his students ensure that every practitioner at Art Beins Karate learns not just techniques, but the values of discipline, resilience, and self-improvement that extend beyond the dojo.
